I'm The Old Man Now
The other night I did some clean and presses for the first time in a long time at the new local gym. Things have been clicking well and I’m almost 10 days into this protein sparing modified fast and … it’s actually not that bad. Goes to show you that you can survive off of fat. 😅
I noticed out of the corner of my eye this kid struggling a bit with his deadlift so I gave him some pointers and he actually improved pretty quickly on the spot. The pointers don’t matter as much as the feeling though. It felt good to actually “help” someone again in person. It was cool. You see … I don’t really get that very much in what I do now in cybersecurity.
I turned to him right before I left and asked him if he was in highschool and he opened up, as if he’d been wanting to talk to someone about this for sometime, on how he was getting ready for basketball season. And it took me back to all those after-school weightlifting sessions with the bluebird coaches. It dawned on me that I was the old man now. I wasn’t the young invincible kid in the Kenwood weight room anymore. And it felt strange since it still feels like yesterday but also good.
I don’t remember all the names of those older guys and coaches that taught me so much in that weight room and this kid is probably not going to remember my name but I’ll be a lesson.
That’s such an interesting concept- how we float in and out of people’s lives leaving such persistent marks.
Dr Andy reminded me the other day during our ABC session of this yoga pose called cobra. He’s not the first chiro to recommend it. I really need to make it a staple on the deadlift and pulling days. It helps a lot with stretching my hips, psoas, and tight abdomen that seems to get so tacked down (probably from all the sitting I do). I believe these will help engage or at least remedy the weird QL issue I have going on.
